THE 60-SECOND PICTURE

Derek Deardorff was on a JCBS Holy Land study tour (Feb 22–Mar 4, 2026) when the US and Israel launched coordinated strikes against Iran, killing Supreme Leader Khamenei on Day 1. He was at the Israel-Lebanon border (Tel Dan) 3 days before Hezbollah opened that front. When Ben Gurion Airport closed, his group evacuated through Eilat → Taba → Cairo. He flew home Mar 4 and was back in Scottsdale Mar 4 evening.

The conflict is ongoing. Operation Epic Fury is in its second week.

FOR DEREK'S STORY

The narrative arc writes itself:

  • Ancient to modern: Dr. Bur Shilling was teaching about Persia enabling Israel's restoration (Cyrus the Great, 537 BCE) while modern Persia (Iran) launched missiles at Israel. The group had this conversation on-site at the Dead Sea on March 1 — Day 2 of the war.
  • Masada doctrine: "Masada will never fall again" — IDF is fighting with that psychology. Derek got the Masada briefing in real-time while Israel was executing its most aggressive offensive in 50 years.
  • Tel Dan: On Feb 25, group stood at the Israel-Lebanon border where Hezbollah stores rockets in civilian villages. Hezbollah opened that front on Feb 28.
  • The evacuation: Ben Gurion closed. Eilat → Taba → Cairo. Ancient exit route out of the Holy Land — the same direction Moses led the Israelites, in reverse.
